    Stolen Bike Finder

    May 10, 2012

Our friends at Pricenomics.com, the same dudes that brought you this, recently launched a stolen bike finder as part of their new project, Racklove. If your bike is stolen in San Francisco and the thief is selling it in Los Angeles, now you have a way to find it. If they’ve stripped the bike down to its frame and are trying to auction it off, you can find it too. You can search on the site or set an alert and we’ll notify when bikes matching the description pop up. Once you find it, you can contact local police to figure out how to get it back. We built this stolen bike finder because we want to make it really hard for criminals to sell stolen bikes online. It boils our blood that it’s so easy to sell stolen bikes. It’s unconscionable that the major “classified†and “auction†sites allow this. As bike lovers, we don’t want to buy and sell bikes where thieves are cashing in. That’s just kind of perverse, right? Very perverse, yes. We hear about a lot of bike theft at the shop and so we have an amazing selection of locky-doos.  I highly recommend you secure your bike with a U-lock and some sort of wheel lock.  That should keep you from having to browse the Stolen Bike Finder. In the meantime, you can read the rest of the article (quoted above) about how the Finder works here.

    Huckleberry in Velojoy!

    May 10, 2012

Susi from Velojoy recently stopped by the shop, took a few pictures, and wrote a very flattering article about our shop. Thanks so much Susi! Here is a snippet from the article: Imagine a bike shop with a wallpapered dressing room that’s decently lit and hung with a large mirror. Where there’s a spacious bench in the open service area for you to put your stuff down and check your smartphone while waiting for your flat to be fixed. Where clothing for women and men is a hung by collection on wooden hangers for easy perusal. That’s Huckleberry Bicycles, a full-service shop (above) geared toward urban cyclists in San Francisco that I visited last week on a 10-day swing through California and Nevada. Opened last November, Huckleberry is an example of a new-generation bike shop that provides the type of merchandising and customer service that most of us take for granted in our everyday shopping experiences, say, at the Gap or J. Crew. Read the rest of the article at Velojoy.

    New Salsa Adventures for 2013

    May 10, 2012

[slideshow][/slideshow] Salsa, the greatest name in bikes, has put together a super spicy lineup for 2013. Salsa continues to hold true to its tagline: Adventure by Bike. This year's adventure is all about attaching a bunch of stuff to your bike and hauling it all out into the mountains. Once in the mountains, you take a picture of your fully loaded bike, upload it to Facebook and then commence to have a really kick-ass time. Whiskey, fire, raccoons, unicorns -- all of that. Salsa is a Minnesota bike company, and like any backwoods Midwestern state, Minnesota apparently doesn't have paved roads. So most of Salsa's bikes are designed for dirt and gravel surfaces, which, coincidentally is a lot like San Francisco's pavement. In other words, Salsa bikes make great bay-area commuters. Recently our first shipment arrived: a fresh load of 2013 Vayas. The Vaya is Salsa's all-around, all-road touring bike.  By "all-road" Salsa means that the Vaya can tackle pavement and gravel--no problem.  Salsa ditched the Casseroll (light-touring, brevet bike) this year but stuck with the heavy-duty touring workhorses, the Vaya and the Fargo.  We will be stocking both! Like last year, the Vaya comes in two different varieties: the Vaya 2 and the Vaya 3.  The most important difference, other than the paint scheme, is that the Vaya 2 has integrated levers; the Vaya 3 comes with bar-end shifters.  I suppose that makes the Vaya 2 a bit sportier and the Vaya 3 a true touring dude's bike.  Whether bar-end shifters or integrated levers are superior, the Vaya 2 is definitely an upgrade in componentry in pretty much every department. At $1,900 here is a look at the Vaya 2: And at $1,450 here is the Vaya 3: On to the Salsa Fargo, which is the only thing close to a mountain bike that we stock. The Fargo is a truly bad-ass off-road touring bike. A steel 29er designed for something that Salsa calls bikepacking, the Fargo has so many mounting eyelets drilled into the frame that you could probably haul the entire contents of your home on this thing. The frame is also suspension corrected, which means that you could throw a suspension fork on a Fargo if you need a more forgiving ride. Like the Vaya, the Fargo comes in two models -- one with integrated levers and BB7 disc brakes, and one with bar-end shifters and BB5 disc brakes. At $1,950 here is the Fargo 2: And at $1,450 the Fargo 3: New for 2013 are two models, the Warbird and the Colossal. Both are in classes of their own. Starting with the Warbird, apparently there is some new adventure out there called "gravel-road racing," and somehow it is different from cyclocross. The bike of choice for said adventure is going to be the Warbird -- alloy frame, carbon ENVE CX fork, disc brakes, and clearance for a 38mm tire. At $2,500 here is the Warbird: The Colossal is, simply, a steel-frame, disc-brake road bike. Like the Warbird it comes with a sweet carbon ENVE fork, but it doesn't have as much tire clearance; only room for a 28mm tire on this beast. The frame geometry is somewhere between an aggressive crit bike and a all-day road bike. At $2,400 here is the Colossal: Over the next couple of weeks/months these bikes will be tricking into the shop. So far, we only have a couple of 2013 Vayas, but expect more soon. If you want to check availability, give us a ring at 415-484-6575. We are your Huckleberry!

    Shop Ride Saturdays!

    May 10, 2012

Aside from all the other great perks of working at Huckleberry (free grease! test-riding the Pinarellos! that new sandwich place nearby!), my fave so far is leading our shop ride every Saturday. You should really join us. We're calling it the Huckleberry Ramble.

Meeting every Saturday at Duboce Park Cafe at 7:50am and rolling out by 8am, we usually head north over the bridge and into the lovely hills of Marin County, attack some hills and/or coffee, and wrap things up by 11:45am back at the shop. No real requirements aside from a road bike in good shape, plus a willingness to laugh and eat pastries and haul ass where applicable. About that: generally, the pace is a lively one but not too competitive. We won't leave anybody behind, but, hey, I do need to get back to the shop on time! Rides end up being about 35 miles. 35 miles OF AWESOME.

One chilly Saturday a few weeks back, for our inaugural Ramble, I got to try out my latest perk--a fall/winter weight jersey from Cedar Cycling, run by our like-minded kinsmen across the Bay. This is some high-class workmanship. It's got a good stiff zipper for one-handed thermoregulation, and even though I'm technically allergic to merino wool, I never felt itchy, just super-toasty and comfortable. I've worn it three times now without needing to wash, and no funky aftereffects to report. I think. Expect to see them in the shop mid-November. In the meantime, as our Indian summer rambles on, check out the lighter-weight Cedar Cycling jerseys and base layers we've got in the shop. Mmmmmm, ramblin'.

    Civia Sale: Belt-Drive Bliss

    May 10, 2012

[slideshow][/slideshow] Civia Kingfields and Civia Bryants are endangered species, folks. These belt-driven beauties will not be around for 2013.  Bummer. We love these bikes and we are sad to see them go.  To me, Civia without a belt-drive bike is like the Doobie Brothers without Michael McDonald. It's just not the same band. No worries, though Civia still has some great doobs their line-up for 2013, including the lovely, urban commuter bike: the Twin City.  We already have a bunch of Twin Cities on the floor, which you should come check out.  But because of how popular the Kingfield and Bryant have been at the shop, we grabbed as many as we could before they dried up.  And the best part: we put them on sale.  Time to take one to the streets. Right now we have every size Kingfield in stock, but only four Civia Bryants: one 8-speed Bryant in a 49cm and two in a 56cm, as well as an 11-speed Bryant demo bike (with a flat bar conversion!) in a size 54cm.  The 11-speed is a one-of-a kind dreamy dream. If you don't already know, here is a quick rundown of the Kingfield and Bryant: The Kingfield and Bryant are steel-framed bikes that are belt-drive compatible.  That means that the frames have a cut-out on the drive-side of the rear triangle that allows for the installation of a belt.  The belt replaces the chain in the bike's drivetrain and has the advantage of being long-lasting, light, and not requiring grease or lubrication.  Belts also tend to shed mud and dirt well.  When we talk about belt-drive bikes, we are also necessarily talking about bikes with internally geared hubs.  Internally geared hubs are not new; they have been around for decades.  They are clean, quiet, and durable. At $1,425 $1,250, the Kingfield is perfectly suited for commuting and moderate touring.  It comes equipped with an 8-speed Shimano Nexus hub, fenders and a rack.  The brakes are v-style brakes and shifting on the Kingfield is accomplished with an awesome JTEK bar-end shifter. The Kingfield does not have integrated shift/brake levers, but the bar-end shifter is extremely reliable and feels great when shifting. At $1,850 $1,750 the 8-speed Bryant is also perfectly suited for commuting and touring.  It has a number of upgrades from the Kingfield although it does not come stock with fenders or a rack.  The most notable upgrades are the inclusion of disc-brakes, integrated levers, and an Alfine hub (necessary for disc brakes). But the real gem of gems here is the 11-speed Bryant that we got our hands on.  This thing is going to disappear fast. Yes it is a demo bike--a demo bike in perfect condition with a flat-bar conversion!  The drop bars and integrated levers have been replaced with my preferred setup: a flat bar with trigger shifters. Yes!  And, of course, it has an 11-speed Alfine hub.  More bat gears, same bat price. $1,850. These bikes won't last long--when they are gone, they are gone.  So come on down to Huckleberry town and grab one (or two) today.  For current availability call 415.484.6575 or e-mail info@huckleberrybicycles.com.

    Thanks for Visiting

    May 10, 2012

I would just like to thank you for visiting our Web site and not some other site right now. Some of you may have been trying to find our Web site and been re-directed to the Web site of another bike shop. We'd prefer not to insult your intelligence, but we are not affiliated with that bike shop. I tend to think that clarity is more important than confusion.

    May 10, 2012

SQFT (www.yoursqft.com) is a project to activate vacant or underutilized spaces by bringing temporary activity to the Mid-Market neighborhood. SQFT was incubated at the Creative Currency hackathon, and in partnership with the City of San Francisco, The Hub, GAFFTA, and Social Capital Markets. Back on August 1 SQFT held a Pop-up event in our neighborhood.  They made a great video about the event that featured our very own Zack Stender.  Thanks SQFT!

    What Happens to Stolen Bikes?

    May 10, 2012

My friend Rohin over at Priceonomics recently wrote an insightful article about bike theft.  I've posted a link to it below, and I'm not just linking to it because I'm in the article...  Enjoy. What Happens to Stolen Bicycles? At Priceonomics, we are fascinated by stolen bicycles. Put simply, why the heck do so many bicycles get stolen? It seems like a crime with very limited financial upside for the thief, and yet bicycle theft is rampant in cities like San Francisco (where we are based). What is the economic incentive for bike thieves that underpins the pervasiveness of bike theft? Is this actually an efficient way for criminals to make money? Read the rest of the article here.

    Plan Ludicrous Confusion

    May 10, 2012

Huckleberry Bicycles would like to thank Mike's "Schmike's" Bikes  for tipping us off to the hottest new marketing strategy in town: URL redirects!  If you like Schmike's as much as we do, you can link to their Web site here: www.huckleberrybicycle.com -- o wait, what?! That domain name looks an awful lot like the Huckleberry Bicycles Web site. The only thing missing is the s at the end of bicycles.  Gee, that is so CONFUSING! It almost seems like an intentional attempt to confuse people. I wonder if that is fair? Or even legal? Well, you know what they say, if you can't beat 'em join em. So we're taking a page from Schmike's book on marketing.  It's time to launch plan Ludicrous Confusion.  That's the plan where we, like Schmike's, register some sweet confusing Web URLs that redirect people to our Web site. We carefully selected some easy-to-confuse domain names to fool Schmike's customers into shopping at Huckleberry.  Here they are: www.mikebike.com www.mikesbitch.com www.micyclesbicycles.com www.mikesbutts.com www.schmikesbikes.com www.somejerknamedschmike.com www.mattsbikes.com www.johnsbikes.com www.davesbikes.com www.bobsbikes.com www.brucesbikes.com www.mikeysbikeys.com www.specialized-concept-store.com www.sekibsekim.com Yup. Those hard-earned dollars that you've been forkin' over to Huckleberry Bicycles will be put to GREAT use!  Soon we'll be buying up all of these beauties and redirecting visitors to the one-and-only www.huckleberrybicycles.com.  So..  See you at Schmike's!   err.. i mean... Huckleberry!

    Pre-Order a 2013 Brompton

    May 10, 2012

[slideshow][/slideshow] Ladies and gentlemen, it is time for us to put in our first order of the latest and greatest Brompton folding bicycles. So, for those of you looking to get on a made-to-order Brompton this year, now is the time to commit.  Unlike the rest of the bicycle industry, Brompton does not have a warehouse full of fresh new bicycles from which we can select all year long. Rather, we receive Bromptons in shipment windows throughout the year. That means that if you don't get pre-order your Brompton before we place the order for our first shipment of bikes, you'll have to either choose one of the floor models we stock or wait several months for the next window to get your custom Brompton. So order yours now! We are giving you from now until January 19th to place an order for your 2013 Brompton. We will include your specifications as one of the bikes in our first shipment, which means that your Brompton will arrive with the first shipment of 2013 bikes. Yes! If you don't know already, Bromptons are the world's greatest folding bike. Seriously. Stylish, practical, and British -- what more could you ask for? You can create your very own custom Brompton, from paint scheme to gears, tires, saddle, handlebar type, and on and on. The end result is your very own personal traveling machine. The 2013 models come with a number of upgrades since last year increasing the smooth-osity of your Brompton: - New crankset with a 130-BCD compatible chainring. - Toolkit attached to bike, hidden inside tubing. See it to believe it. - New waterbottle mount that goes behind the handlebars. - New double-walled rims - New aluminimum brake levers adjustable for your hand size. And every year, Brompton offers a few paint colors for free. This year those colors are: black, white, cobalt blue, and orange. So here is how this works. There is no online Brompton-ordering system that we are aware of. So we will be happy to wlk you through the process of creating your Brompton. Give us a call at 415-484-6575 or e-mail us at info@huckleberrybicycles.com. We will walk you through the process of ordering a custom Brompton, and you will be among the first this year to practice the fold with your 2013 Brompton! In the meantime, check out this smooth bonus video -- the Brompton factory in London:
